Abstract

This document is the result of the experience acquired creating a tool for Gas Turbines Performance and Fluid Systems modelling but most of the issues encountered are applicable to different networks problems (electrical lines, pipe routing or control). The text compiles mathematical, numerical and methodological issues encountered in the process. In this work an object oriented modelling approach is followed to simulate a network. Once a topology is created, the next step is to establish the most appropriate set of algebraic equations to characterise the problem. This process comprises the proper selection of equations, unknowns and sets of initial conditions that will allow the correct resolution of the system using a Newton Raphson algorithm, trying to avoid Jacobian matrix singularities. When this is not possible, instead of changing the solution method, other alternatives, as a multilevel strategy, are used.
