Abstract
This lecture describes the evolution of aerodynamic design methods from an industrial point of view. The introduction of new simulation techniques and new problems are sorted by order of appearance and interest, to improve researchers’ understanding on the jungle of turbomachinery designs. Although the presentation will be based on the personal experience of the presenter during the past 20 years in the introduction and deployment of design and analysis methods for uncooled, or moderately cooled, low-pressure turbines, most of the problems share a large degree of commonality with other turbomachinery components. The presentation is expected to cover not only purely aerodynamic aspects but also closely related disciplines such as heat transfer, aeroelasticity and noise. The presentation will be closed with a short term outlook of realistic, yet challenging, problems.
